Grazyna Bacewicz recordings – a (very long) checklist
Grażyna Bacewicz died 40 years ago today. She would have been 60 years old in less than 3 weeks. Which means there’s an even bigger anniversary coming up, and I’ll try to write something about her life then. But right now, something entirely different.
The other day someone asked me a question about Bacewicz recordings, and that prompted me to put together the list which I am publishing below (I thought it would take much less time but I’m glad I did it anyway). The list is based on Malgorzata Gasiorowska’s monograph (Małgorzata Gąsiorowska Bacewicz Kraków: Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne 1999, p. 446-478). I have tried, to the best of my knowledge, to incorporate all the recordings that have appeared since, as well as the ones that Gąsiorowska missed. Still, I’m pretty certain that what I’m presenting here is not complete or 100% correct. In some cases, my information sources were a little vague. For instance, I’m not sure if all the recordings of Oberek no. 1 and no. 2 are where they should be on the list – sometimes the descriptions I found wouldn’t give the number at all, which left me guessing (probably no. 1, right?). If you’re aware of any recordings that haven’t been included, please post about it in the comments section below, and I’ll add your findings into the body of this post (and don’t hesitate to let me know about mistakes you spot either). I will also try to update this post as new recordings become available but, again, please feel free to use the comments section to let me know about anything I may miss.
The way information is arranged here is more or less self-explanatory. All the titles and names of ensembles etc. have been translated into English, which, come to think of it, may not have been a very good idea.
This list does not contain vinyl records which have been moved to the next post.

Wow, Maciek! When you break the silence, you smash it with overwhelming . . . non-silence! ; )
Ha, ha, ha. Karl, you have no idea! I like reading bibliographies but hate compiling them. I didn’t think preparing this would be much like compiling a bibliography. And it wasn’t… because it was much, much worse! What a dreary affair… But I like what I see, now that it’s finished. Usefulness might be an issue but who cares…
you may already be aware of this – http://cocoa.fbk.eu
has many of her works available free
I didn’t know that, thanks.
Hm, it looks like what they have are OCD 310 and 311…
Maciek, thanks for your tremendous work – this compilation is impressive ! And I’m sure I’m not the only one for whom it’s a very useful reference.
To make some value added: you may add the following to the list:
http://www.centaurrecords.com/images/crc2966_bc.jpg
http://www.dux.pl/upload/obrazki/okladki/0691_mini.jpg
http://www.bearton.pl/quartet_info.htm
Thanks a lot for the compliment and thanks so much for those links! I noticed the DUX disc some time ago (and another one for my Karlowicz discography) but can’t seem to find the couple of minutes it will take to edit it into the post. (OK, I’m lazy.) The other two are completely new to me (how could I miss those BeArTon quartets!?)! I’ll try to add all three in the coming days, I promise!
Thanks again!
And another one I’ll need to add to this list (in due time
):
http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Chandos/CHAN10533
(It’s scheduled for release at the end of the month. I’m sure they have it somewhere on the Chandos site but I just can’t seem to be able to find it so the Presto link will have to do.)
Another one to be released (in September 2009) is a recording on Sony of pieces for chamber orchestra: the Concerto, Divertimento, Sinfonietta (premiere recording), Symphony (ditto), Oberek (premiere recording in this arrangement). Everything performed by the Chamber Orchestra of the National Philharmonic in Warsaw, conducted by Jan Lewtak. So far, no cover art or catalogue number seems to be available…
Maciek, just to make your to-do list more challenging, please find below two addenda more:
http://www.amuz.lodz.pl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=100&Itemid=103&limit=1&limitstart=0
http://merlin.pl/Pozegnanie-Ojczyzny_DUX/browse/product/4,620852.html
The rationale for inserting a Merlin link is more or less the same as in case of Presto link. Hope you will excuse me.
Ah, wonderful! Thank you very much!
6 new entries pending… that’s a lot! I’ll try to add all of these over the weekend.
OK, I’ve updated the list. On the way, I found another one – a 3-disc set!
http://www.amuz.lodz.pl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=94&Itemid=103&limit=1&limitstart=0
Didn’t have THAT much time today, so I’ll include this one into my NEXT update…
That 3CD set keeps putting me off a bit (a LOT of work). So I’ve added the new DUX with Jakowicz instead (DUX 0685). I expect it to be one of the two finest centenary releases (along with the Zimerman disc due out later this year).
Fab. Many thanks.
Another addition from the Decca/Philips archives: the early recordings by Jean Guillou.

This will be the first one on your list containig Esquisse for Organ (probably the first performance on 8 VI 1969 in Bordeaux).
A few additions more:
1. Concerto for String Orchestra performed by Aukso Chamber Orchestra on small Polish label Box Music:
http://www.boxmusic.com.pl/wyd-aukso.html
2. XIII International Wieniawski Violin Competition Chronicle vol.2 – Sonata No. 2 performed by Maria Shalgina (published by DUX in 2006)

3. CD specially produced by the Polish Music Information Centre (Polmic) for the MIDEM – “Polish 20th and 21st-Century Music. From Romanticism to New Avant-Garde” – with compositions by Mieczysław Karłowicz, Grażyna Bacewicz, Krzysztof Knittel, Eugeniusz Knapik, Dobromiła Jaskot and Dariusz Przybylski (polmic 040). It includes “Pensieri notturni” performed by Cracow State Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra under Andrzej Markowski. It was recorded live at the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall (during 5th “Warsaw Autumn” International Festival of Contemporary Music), September 23rd, 1961. The booklet states that this score was published by Polmic in 2005 so probably there is another CD by Polmic comprising this recording.

I am not sure whether this is the same recording as the one featured on 5 CD re-edition of Jean Guillou early recordings published this year (see my previous message):
